The Professional Driver World Championship 2020 postponed by 12 months


UICR (Union Internationale des Chauffeurs Routiers) had to postpone the Professional Driver World Championship 2020 by 12 months due to the COVID-19

Due to concerns given to completing the members’ domestic professional driver competitions in these unprecedented times, the UICR working group have examined the options for this year’s Professional Driver World Championship competitions and following deliberation and considering everybody’s health and wellbeing – the decisions was made to postpone the event until 2021 due to the Covid 19 Pandemic with the following statement:

UICR and Sindikat Hrvatskog Vozača announced on April 7, 2020, the postponement of their flagship team competition, the Professional Driver World Championship, to be held in August this year in Zagreb, Croatia.

The health of everyone involved in the competition is a priority and to avoid unnecessary pressure on the national public services involved in the running of the competition.

Now that decision has been finalized, it will help the national member competitions to be rescheduled in the interested of everybody involved.

For only the second time in its eighty-year history, the World Professional Driver Championships to be held in Zagreb in August 2020 has had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 global crisis.

The President of the Union Internationale des Chauffeurs Routiers (UICR) Robert Kastner and the President of Sindikat Hrvatskog Vozača (SHV) Miljenko Gočin, the organizing body of the 2020 UICR Professional Driver World Championship in Zagreb, had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the event and reschedule it in August 2021.

Over thirty-two countries teams have been making preparations to compete in 2020. However, President Kastner and President Gočin expressed their shared concern about the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The significant impact it is having globally was a major cause of concern for team preparations for the Professional Driver World Championship 2020 in Zagreb.

All parties took into consideration the enormous efforts of the Sindikat Hrvatskog Vozača, staff and volunteers to stage 2020 Professional Driver World Championship in Zagreb; however, President Kastner said: “the safety of all members of the UICR family and the wider community, as well as the fairness of the competition, take priority.”

The leaders agreed that the Professional Driver World Championship in Zagreb could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and the Professional Driver World Championship will be hosted in Zagreb, Croatia in 2021.
