New Global Charter for Women in Road Transport Adopted to Support Operators

A major step forward for gender inclusion in the transport sector was taken at this year’s IRU General Assembly in Geneva, where members formally adopted the Charter for Women in Road Transport.

The new global Charter sets out a clear framework of principles designed to increase women’s participation across the commercial road transport industry, addressing ongoing workforce shortages while improving the sector’s attractiveness and professionalism.

The industry continues to face significant challenges related to skills gaps and labour shortages. Encouraging more women to join—and remain in—the sector is recognised as a strategic priority. The Charter reflects this commitment by focusing on removing barriers and creating more inclusive workplaces across mobility and logistics.

Six Principles to Drive Change

The Charter introduces six core principles that operators and organisations can use to guide their policies and practices:

  • Neutral recruitment: Employers are encouraged to adopt clear, inclusive job descriptions and recruitment practices that attract both women and men.
  • Career development: Equal access to training and professional growth opportunities for all employees.
  • Equal pay: Ensuring fair remuneration based on role, experience and skills—not gender.
  • Work-life balance: Supporting flexible working conditions and smooth reintegration after maternity leave.
  • Conflict resolution: Establishing transparent processes to address workplace concerns, including bullying or discrimination.
  • Safe and dignified workplaces: Investing in better infrastructure such as parking, depots and terminals, with particular attention to the needs of women drivers.

Building on Industry Work

The Charter builds on years of research and engagement led by IRU, including global surveys on workforce challenges and driver shortages. These efforts have highlighted the untapped potential of women in the sector and the need for targeted action to improve recruitment and retention.

By adopting this Charter, IRU members reinforce their commitment to creating an industry that is more diverse, inclusive and sustainable—benefiting operators, employees and the wider economy.

UICR supports this initiative and encourages members and partners to align with the Charter’s principles, helping to shape a stronger future for road transport.
