Transition Period Granted for Tacho Gen2V2
Important Update for Transport Operators: Transition Period Granted for Tacho Gen2V2 Retrofit Compliance
Transport operators across the EU have been eagerly awaiting this news. Following discussions at the European Commission’s Committee on Road Transport on 18 December 2024, Member States reached a consensus to introduce a two-month “educational learning period” for the retrofit obligation of vehicles requiring version 2 smart tachographs.
Key Points of the Announcement:
- The retrofit requirement applies to vehicles operating across EU Member States (outside their state of registration) that are currently equipped with analogue or digital non-smart tachographs.
- These vehicles must be retrofitted with a version 2 smart tachograph by 31 December 2024.
- However, enforcement authorities will focus on raising awareness instead of issuing penalties or sanctions during the leniency period, which runs until 28 February 2025.
This extension provides operators who have faced challenges in completing the tachograph retrofit with additional time to comply.
Important Note for EU-UK Operations:
While this leniency applies within the EU, it does not extend to the EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) context.
- For operators transporting goods into the UK, including Northern Ireland, compliance with retrofit requirements must align with the original deadlines set out in the legislation.
- From 1 January 2025, enforcement authorities in the UK will actively monitor and enforce compliance.
Advice for Operators:
To avoid potential disruptions and penalties, it is strongly recommended that operators adhere to the original retrofit deadlines wherever possible. Ensure vehicles are equipped with version 2 smart tachographs by the legislative deadlines, especially for cross-border operations involving the UK. moving goods into UK, including NI from 1 January 2025.
