Inventor of the Trixi mirror: simple idea that saves lives

In Munich, 6,000 Trixi mirrors could soon be installed at over 1,100 intersections. Truck accidents at the intersections are said to be reduced. Spiegel invented Ulrich Willburger. His daughter was the victim of a turning accident.

It’s been 25 years since Ulrich Willburger from Seehausen invented the Trixi mirror. Trixi, named after his daughter Beatrix, who had recently had a serious accident. The 13-year-old was on her bike when she was hit and overrun by a concrete mixer turning right.

She survived seriously injured, but has been paralyzed on one side since then. A typical blind spot accident, it was said at the time by an official body, explains Willburger: “Both the experts and the police explained to us: This is repeated stereotypically, there is nothing you can do about it. I didn’t want to leave it like that. ”

Germany updates road traffic law with new rules on lorry turning speed, legal passing distance for bicycles and new cycling zones

A wide range of new traffic safety measures has been agreed by the German parliament as part of an update to the country’s traffic law.

Drivers who park in cycle lanes or follow emergency vehicles through an emergency corridor will now face higher fines, and, for the latter, the possibility of a driving ban. Read more

Nine EU countries voice opposition to EU ‘Mobility Package’

The number of countries opposing the EU mobility package grew from six to nine on Tuesday (18 February) when the transport ministers of Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Cyprus, Malta and Estonia made their positions clear in Brussels.

This week government delegates from more than 80 countries are discussing how to step up ambition and improve global road safety in the next decade.

During the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm, Swedish Minister for Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth presented the Stockholm Declaration, stressing the need for continued, ambition in particular by working towards a new global fatality reduction target, as the current target expires this year.
